Leaking Troop Movements on Page One

Many (in particular the MSM) believe they are (and should be) immune from sedition and treason laws. The West Los Angeles LoC dogma pays lip service to secrecy, treason and sedition laws, by minimizing them in the following fashion:

"I suppose if someone were to disclose troop movements during war, that's what the treason rules and stuff are meant to outlaw."
***

The Los Angeles Times is very much anti-Iraq War; that is its political agenda. Note the general developments that:

(a) Iraq has formed a permanent, self-governing cabinet,
(b) US troop levels are expected to be reduced later in '06, and
(c) US elections in November '06...

With that in mind, today's page one, lead article in the Los Angeles Times is ... well, it speaks for itself:

"But other [US military] officers have privately acknowledged that [planned operations are] ... likely to prevent any significant drawdown this year.

"Since the beginning of the year, military commanders have said that progress in forming a government and training the Iraqi military might allow U.S. troop levels to be reduced from more than 130,000 to 100,000 or fewer. But a senior officer privy to Iraq planning discussions, who requested anonymity when discussing internal Pentagon debates, said there was "a growing realization" that ongoing violence was hampering withdrawal plans.

"If commanders decide to launch a large-scale offensive in Ramadi, they may have to wait until the new government in Baghdad is more firmly in place. Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has yet to appoint a defense or interior minister, and a U.S. intelligence official said coalition officers had refrained from launching such an operation because of opposition from the preceding interim government.

"Speaking weeks before Casey had committed the new troops to Baghdad, the intelligence official said U.S. Marines, who are deployed in Al Anbar, as early as December had been discussing plans for a major sweep in Ramadi, but remained concerned about a potentially adverse political fallout, as occurred after offensives in Fallouja and Najaf."

"Ramadi is literally a bloody stalemate," the intelligence official said. "The governor is a prisoner in his own provincial capital building."An attack on Ramadi would force U.S. commanders to draw on significant manpower to clear out and then stabilize the
region, as well as to prepare contingencies for any backlash.

"You can't do that and withdraw at the same time," said another military officer.

Well of course by some convoluted Westside logic, this doesn't constitute the leaking troop of movement information...

Smashing Fascism: The Battle of Midway

Eradicating World Terror, Jihadism and Fascism in 15 Minutes: The Battle of Midway -- June 4-6, 1942

Memorial Day and the first week of June pays respect to our fallen military heroes. We commemorate the Allied D-Day assault against the Nazis on the beaches of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. The week is also full of 20th Century warfare anniversaries. The Israeli-Arab 6-Day War began on June 5, 1967. Israeli jet pilots destroyed Saddam Hussein’s Osirak nuclear reactor on June 7, 1981. The Marshall Plan was introduced as a Cold War defense, on June 5, 1947.

Yet a US Navy battle this same week, just 6 months after Pearl Harbor and a full 2 years before D-Day, goes largely unnoticed, lost down the memory hole; yet it certainly represents the greatest naval victory in history, and perhaps the pivotal event in world military history since the Battle of Little Round Top at Gettysburg in July 1863. It is the Battle of Midway, which, like Gettysburg, occurred over a three-day period, June 4-6, 1942.

The Background.

The Japanese WWII strategy was to destroy the U.S. Navy quickly, parallel with the successful tactics of the German infantry blitzkriegs in Europe. The December 1941 surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor destroyed or damaged 8 American battleships - then the core of US Naval groups.

Pearl Harbor was the first attack. The Battle of Midway, just 6 months later, was to be Japan’s coup de grace against the US.

New warfare paradigms had shattered the Old Guard military structure that had existed more-or-less since medieval times. Germany coupled a new military strategy – the Blitzkrieg -- with an advanced new weapon – the Panzer tank brigade. The result was that German armies over-ran countries in mere days or weeks.

Similarly, Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor was an equally revolutionary development, a precursor to intercontinental missiles. Japan had built a dozen aircraft carriers, and with them the Zero fighter, vastly superior to any fighter plane in the world. This combination, along with highly-trained pilots, resulted in Japan having mobile military airfields which could roam the oceans and attack unannounced from a hundred miles beyond the horizon. In an age before advanced radar, these carriers could launch the equivalent of one-sided, un-announced intercontinental missile attacks.

At the outset of WWII, the Japanese Navy was vastly more powerful than the US Navy. The US had only 6 aircraft carriers worldwide, of various classes, compared to Japan's 10 carriers (with 3 more emerging from Imperial shipyards in the ensuing weeks). In addition, Japan's naval fighter plane, the Zero fighter, was in a class of its own, and it was flown by a large, well-trained pilot corps.

Even more stunning, after the devastation of the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor, the Japanese superiority in battleships was 11-to-0. In short, Japan had an overwhelmingly strong navy.

The Japanese Plan - Surprise Attack.

The Japanese Midway strategy was two-fold: To take over the U.S.-controlled island of Midway, which would deny the U.S. the ability to stage any operations in the Western Pacific; and, to destroy the remaining US Pacific Fleet. Without the US Navy to defend the West Coast, or to stop Japan’s empire building in the far east, Japan intended Midway to be the decisive, take-out blow against the US.

A small Japanese carrier group first launched an attack on Alaska, intended to draw the U.S. Fleet out of Pearl. Then, a second and much larger Japanese carrier group would attack Midway Island. The Japanese strategy – second-guessed over the ensuing decades – was to perhaps split the U.S. Fleet into to smaller groups, one responding to the Alaskan attack, the other to Midway. The overwhelmingly large Japanese flotilla would crush what remained of the US Navy, anticipated to be separated into an Alaskan force and a Midway force.

Off the western horizon of Midway, out of sight of the US Midway scout planes, Japan had amassed an overwhelming carrier and battleship attack force, laying in wait to surprise and destroy the US forces. The combined Japanese Alaskan and Midway forces, including those in support role, involved 200 ships, including 8 carriers, 11 battleships, 22 cruisers, 65 destroyers, 21 submarines and approximately 700 aircraft.

The US Naval forces were tiny, in comparison.

Had the Japanese achieved their objective of a quick knock-out of the US Pacific Fleet at Midway (following the devastation at Pearl Harbor), the US West Coast would have been substantially defenseless against the Japanese Navy just 6 months into the war. Although the US had authorized a naval shipbuilding program the prior year, the launch of those boats was months away. It is entirely possible – and the subject of much Monday morning quarterbacking by military thinkers – that threatened or actual Japanese naval attacks on the US West Coast would have caused the US to agree to a ceasefire with Japan. It could have also forced the U.S. to divert scarce naval assets away from Europe, thereby allowing Germany to prevail over England and thus win the war. (See Epilogue, below.)

"Midway was far more than a decisive naval victory. It was far more than the turning of the tide in the Pacific war. In a strategic sense, Midway represents one of the turning points of world history--and in that role it remains under-appreciated."

--- James R. Schlesinger, former US Secretary of Defense

The Surprise Counter-Attack.

But unknown to the Japanese, their military codes had been broken by the US codebreakers just weeks before the Midway attack. With solid warning that the Japanese were amassing their forces for a surprise assault on Midway and any US Naval ships that came to Midway’s defense, the US did not split its fleet, nor hold any ships in reserve. Rather, the U.S. gambled and sent all three American carriers - the entire US carrier fleet in the Pacific - to lay in wait for the Japanese flotilla at Midway. In short, it was a surprise counterattack on a surprise attack.

The Battle.

As the Japanese launched their attack on Midway Island, they had no idea that the US carrier forces lay off the horizon a couple hundred miles to the east. On June 4, 1942, four Japanese aircraft carriers launched a strike with over 100 combat planes against the Naval Air Base at Midway. The US Midway base and its airplanes were damaged, but not completely destroyed.

As the Japanese attacked Midway Island, squadrons of US torpedo planes from the USS Hornet, the USS Enterprise and the USS Yorktown, launched their surprise counter-attacks on the Japanese carrier fleet.

The US torpedo bombers came in "low and slow" over the water to drop their torpedoes. One by one, they were blown from the sky by the superior Japanese Zero fighters. Not a single US torpedo bomber scored a hit on the 4 Japanese carriers.

Almost every US pilot and crew was killed, including by Japanese patrols that pulled American fliers out of the water and executed them. Only 2 of 42 torpedo bomber squadrons survived.

But the men of those 40 doomed squadrons from the Hornet, Enterprise and Yorktown had not died in vain. The Japanese Zero fighter cover normally would have flown high above the Japanese carriers, forming a protective bubble. But in order to repel the torpedo bombers on their “low and slow” approach, many of the Zeros had been brought down to low altitude, all while the Japanese flotilla scrambled in evasive maneuvering.

The Japanese mistakenly believed that the doomed torpedo bombers from the Hornet, Enterprise and Yorktown had been launched from Midway Island. In response, the Japanese Admiral Nagumo decided to strike Midway again, and returning Japanese fighters were re-armed with bombs for the attack on Midway’s airfields.

But as the Japanese were re-arming their fighters, they received a delayed report from one of their scouting planes, warning of a sighting of a US carrier. Nagumo reversed himself, and ordered that his fighter planes be re-armed with torpedoes. Thus, the decks of the Japanese carriers – painted yellow, with a red sun signifying the Japanese imperial war regime - were strewn with bombs, torpedoes, fuel tanks and fuel lines.

A few moments after 10:00 a.m., June 4th, 1942, the Japanese Admiral Nagumo and his staff believed that they had just annihilated all of the U.S. air cover for Midway, and in addition, their massive armada including 4 aircraft carriers with vastly superior planes and pilots was ready to attack the just-sighted U.S. carrier. Admiral Nagumo believed that Japan was one launch away from annihilating the United States Navy. The War of the Pacific was about end in glorious victory for the Empire of the Rising Sun.

Yet, at this critical moment, the so-called "lost squadrons" of US planes from the USS Enterprise and USS Yorktown arrived at high altitude over the Japanese carrier group. Lt. Cmdr.Wade McCluskey’s Enterprise dive bomber group of 32 planes had failed earlier to locate the Japanese fleet, and rather than turn his fighters back to his carrier, he changed course to search out the Japanese ships. They were located by trailing a Japanese destroyer trying to catch up to its flotilla. As McClusky arrived, Commander Maxwell Leslie also arrived in formation high above the Japanese, with a 17-plane squandron of Yorktown dive bombers.

McCluskey’s and Maxwell's dive bombers came upon an extraordinary situation: Four sitting duck Japanese carriers, without their protective shield of Zero fighter planes, with scores if not hundreds of Japanese planes sitting on the carrier decks, strewn with ordnance, fuel and crew:

“If they’d looked up they coulda seen us, but they were too busy trying to destroy the torpedo planes that had gotten there first.”
-- Wilbur Roberts, U.S. Dive Bomber

The Japanese carrier decks were painted yellow, with the empire’s huge “Rising Sun” red circle painted on the bow of each carrier. This was a further gift to the U.S. dive bombers -- a red targeting ball on a yellow deck, set against a dark gray ocean:

“Here are the arrogant Japanese with their bright yellow decks with a meatball up on the bow.”
--Lt. Richard Best, U.S. Dive Bomber

At 10:22 a.m., June 4, 1942, the U.S. dive bombers - armed with bombs, not torpedoes - attacked the Japanese carrier fleet from high altitude in classic dive-bomber style. The Japanese had only a few minutes to savor what they thought had been a victory over the United States; it all evaporated within 5 minutes, courtesy of the dive bombers.

There were 4 Japanese carriers at Midway. The U.S. dive bombers immediately scored hits on 2 of those carriers (the Akagi and the Kaga) by precision dropping the bombs onto the carriers' loaded decks. There was no Japanese fighter cover in place at higher altitude to repel the attacks. A couple of bombs from US dive bombers, aided by the re-fueling tanks, torpedoes and bombs stacked on the decks of the Japanese carriers, turned into an inferno. Akagi and Kaga were destroyed.

Shortly thereafter, a dive bomber squadron from the USS Yorktown attacked and destroyed the third Japanese aircraft carrier, the Soryu. Notably, these Yorktown dive bombers attacked with only a dozen working bombs.

Later, a small squadron of dive bombers from the USS Enterprise attacked and burnt the fourth and last Japanese carrier, the Hiryu, but not before Hiryu was able to launch an attack that disabled the USS Yorktown.

All four Japanese carriers at Midway – the Akagi, the Kaga, the Soryu and the Hiryu, burned and sank to the bottom of the Pacific.

The ailing Yorktown was later sunk by a Japanese submarine while limping back to Pearl Harbor. Minor skirmishes between the retreating US and Japanese naval groups continued through June 6th.

The Result.

When various other skirmishes ended by June 6, Japan had lost 4 carriers, 332 aircraft, and hundreds of its best pilots and crew. The US had lost only one carrier, 144 planes and scores of pilots.

Japan had 9 aircraft carriers when Midway began. One day later, it had only 5.

The U.S. had only 3 carriers advantage going into the Midway battle. After Midway, it still had 3 carriers, as the USS Saratoga came out of dry-dock and replaced the sunken USS Yorktown.

Japan had planned to seize Midway, and emerge from the battle with a 9-0 carrier advantage, giving the mobile airfields and its Zero fighters free reign of the Pacific (including over Pearl Harbor and even the US West Coast). Instead, Midway remained in U.S. hands, and the overwhelming Japanese carrier dominance was reduced to a basic parity (5-3).

The Battle of Midway was nothing short of a rout of the vastly superior Japanese Navy.

With the US war shipyards already producing at full capacity, Japan had lost at Midway its one chance to defeat the US via an early take-out. Instead, it was a matter of time before the massive US industrial war machine would overwhelm the imperial militarized Japanese.

10:15 a.m., June 4, 1942, turned out to be the height of the fascist Imperial Japanese Empire. Unscathed and convinced of victory over the US after destroying almost every U.S. torpedo bomber in the initial engagements of June 4th, Japan's war effectively became a lost cause by 10:30 a.m.

The US Navy - outnumbered in carriers, ships, technology, planes and pilots - had achieved the greatest naval victory in modern history.

The near total destruction of the first wave of U.S. pilots and crew on board the “low and slow” torpedo bombers was not in vain; it alone made possible the exact conditions that allowed 50 U.S. dive bombers to send the Japanese armada to the bottom of the ocean minutes later.

Epilogue and the Big Picture.

Modern historians do not understand the nature of the fascist, racist Japanese Imperial armed forces. Japan’s immediate goals leading up to Pearl Harbor were regional domination. But what lay behind that, is never questioned; historians ignore why the high echelons of the Japanese warlord establishment craved regional dominance. Instead, they focus on “rational” explanations, such as raw material procurement.

Western historians simply miss the point: The Japanese military was hell-bent on destroying any and all peoples on the earth who were not Japanese. (Anyone confused, should start with a quick tutorial of Japan’s genocide of 300,000 Nanking civilians – in just one month.)

Perhaps the true story of the Japanese war empire is too politically incorrect for leftists. It may the the most fundamental case for war preparedness in the last century.

What if the Japan has wiped out the US Navy at Midway? It is not enough to assert that Japan’s goals were regional domination; thus, Japan would have left the US alone once Japan acquired a certain perimeter of island bases. Japan was seeking glory for the Emperor, which mean killing non-Japanese soldiers and, sadly, civilians.

We don’t understand genocide very well in the US, so we talk around it. But the Japanese mindset in WWII was conquest and genocide. So when you read revisionist history, downplaying the Jap menace to the world, don’t believe it.

In 1942, Germany was about to topple Russia, England was on life support, fearing an invasion once Germany had finished off Russia, and for a few brief minutes on June 4, Japan believed that it was about to send the remaining US Navy Pacific carrier fleet to the bottom of the ocean, leaving the West Coast (and the entire Pacific) completely open to the overwhelmingly powerful Japanese Navy.

- Might the US have abandoned its “Europe First” policy? Americans were still wary of European wars, and fear of the Japs was high.
- Might the US have diverted materiel to the Pacific, thereby curtailing critical supplies to Stalin and Churchill? Might Russia and/or England have thereafter fallen?
- Might Japan have begun directly attacking the US, to sue for surrender from a position of dominance? Doolittle’s Tokyo raids were only 2 months in the past….
- MacArthur surrendered in the Philippines in 1942; with a Japanese Midway victory, might other vast American armies and navies suffered the same fate?
- Might Japan have then attacked Russia, as part of its Axis duties, thereby forcing Stalin to pull forces off of the battle with Germany, to defend far-off Siberia?
- Etc.

***

So during this Memorial Day remembrance, remember the Battle of Midway, its codebreakers, and the dozens of torpedo-bombers, dive-bombers and other crews of the U.S. Navy who changed the course of history.

Book Recommendation

Bummer cannot recommend a book more highly than Winston Groom's book,

1942: The Year That Tried Men's Souls

***

In December 1941, at Pearl Harbor, America was rampantly pacifist.(FN1) (Generations of leftist historians have tried to lipstick it by describing America as "isolationist").

The old canard that Pearl Harbor had "awakened a sleeping giant" may be true, but in December 1941, the giant was pretty much naked, prostrate, unemployed, and severely hung over.

What is never taught are the details of the giant's "wake up period." It was not until late 1942(FN2) that the US was more-or-less on its feet and on war footing. So what happened during the year after Pearl Harbor, while the giant tried to get out of bed?

As our nation's universities became havens for leftist faculty after WWII, the story of 1942 had to be downplayed, even ignored. To teach the story of 1942 is to encourage military preparedness, and to highlight the gross errors of the US as an anti-war society during the 1920's and 1930's. (FN3)

1942 had to be downplayed, with a little help from military men who did not want the real story to be told, lest it hurt their service branch or their own careers.

In 1942, we came close to military failure. By a hair. Sure, it may be called the year that the giant tried to wake up. But in reality, it was Darkness before Dawn. 942 is better remembered as the year that the giant was almost slain. The darkest hours.

Historian Winston Groom explains it all, in context. I cannot give a book a higher recommendation. Fitting reading for this Memorial Day period.
_______
(1) - Luckily, Roosevelt understood the gathering storm and, whatever his faults, had done as much as any president could do, in the face of rampant leftist and populist anti-war sentiment. His naval shipbuilding and lend-lease plans - pre-Pearl Harbor - continue to resonate to this day as the work of a true leader.

(2) - With the American-led invasion of North Africa via Operation Torch. Interesting historical question: What army was the first to engage against an attacking US military in the Atlantic theatre? The French, in Morocco.

(3) - Leftists historians often ascribe American "isolationism" as being borne of the Great Depression. Leftists obfuscate the fact that during the boom economy of the 1920's, the US military was largely left to rot. Further, the Communist/Labor agitation in the US - the IWW and other Red groups - were instrumental in pressing an anti-war agenda. The Great Depression, although certainly a factor, is used by leftists to obscure the fact that the US anti-war movement came to its natural conclusion with the US and its Allies almost losing the War.

Effete Thugs Lose Yet Again

Although the case was about other matters, a judge has rightfully decided that an online journalist enjoys the same legal protections as any other journalist.

This was important. The effete thug liberal MSM has, since the 60's and 70's, acted as if they have complete immunity from the law - as if the vaunted 4th Estate was the overseer of the other branches of government, and therefore immune from the laws that apply to every person.

The liberal MSM loved this, because ... the MSM was uniformly liberal. "Press immunity" meant immunity solely for liberals. Conservatives were not included.

The MSM is still uniformly liberal, as moderates and conservatives are not allowed into the club. The consequent rise of alternative media is, as all B23 know, chipping away at the MSM hegemony.

Leftists don't want conservatives to have a level playing field in the media. The fallacies of Leftists arguments are too easy to expose with logic, and over time, Leftist agruments lose, even to poor, below average intelligence groups. In the long run, leftist societies are poor. Non-leftist societies are not poor. The fall of the collectivists Soviet empire is the 70-year petrie dish that proved the point -- over 4 generations.

***
The instant court case is important, in that the elite MSM and the liberal powers-that-be - began demanding that the internet needed "filtering" and "gatekeeping."

Why? Because the liberal MSM was losing control of the Message. What horrors, if alternative media are allowed to expose the MSM bias. So, how do stop alternative media? Claim that they are not "legitimate media" and therefore not worthy of any press protections for what they write.

***

So long as the liberal elite remain in control of the MSM, it is important, legally, that there be no legal distinctions made between MSM press and alternative press. The rules applicable to the leftist MSM should be the same rules for the ROC media. Otherise, you are giving advantage to one substantive opinion and not to another - EXACTLY what the 1st Amendment prohibits.

Quaint backstory postings here, here , here, here, ...damn I cannot find the link to the Dems demanding that there be "filters" on the internet, after Kerry lost due to the Swifties.....

SAN JOSE, Calif. - A state appeals court on Friday rejected Apple Computer Inc.'s bid to identify the sources of leaked product information that appeared on Web sites, ruling that online reporters and bloggers are entitled to the same protections as traditional journalists.

"In no relevant respect do they appear to differ from a reporter or editor for a traditional business-oriented periodical who solicits or otherwise comes into possession of confidential internal information about a company," Justice Conrad Rushing of the 6th District Court of Appeal wrote in a unanimous 69-page ruling.

Snow Melts after 2 Weeks

White House spokesmodel Tony Snow lasts almost 2 weeks before blowing it:

White House compares illegal immigration to speeding

WASHINGTON - The White House on Friday said a Senate bill that would grant legal status to illegal immigrants is analogous to a traffic law that allows a speeder to pay a fine and continue driving. "If you had a traffic ticket and you paid it, you're not forever a speeder, are you? So the fact is, you have paid your debt to society. Then you move forward," White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said.

The "traffic ticket" analogy raised eyebrows on Capitol Hill, where many House Republicans regard illegal immigration as a grave crime. "I don't know if Tony meant to trivialize it or not," said Will Adams, spokesman for Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo. "But it's certainly misleading. The penalty for a speeding ticket is a fine. The penalty for being here illegally is being removed from this country."

I wonder if Will Adams has roots to founding fathers John Adams I and II?

Hell, 22 Degrees

Well well well, Hell might have gotten a little overnight frost:

Federal Judge: The First Amendment does not protect a news reporter or that reporter's news organization from producing documents in a criminal case.

WASHINGTON - A federal judge on Friday ordered Time magazine to turn over
documents for a former White House aide to use in his defense to perjury and other charges in the CIA leak case.

The order by U.S. District Reggie B. Walton...ruled that reporters do not have a right to refuse to provide notes, drafts of articles or other information in a criminal case.

"The First Amendment does not protect a news reporter or that reporter's news organization from producing documents ... in a criminal case," Walton wrote in a 40-page ruling.

MSM Attacks

Immigration reform is being voted upon in the Senate. The House passed a get-tough bill; the Senate bill isn't as get-tough.

Bush is not leading on the issue; he seems poised to sign whatever Congress passes.

Ergo, the Conference committee between the House and Senate will be critical. With the House leadership as the hard-liners, they are in the driver's seat.

So what does the MSM do?

Commence a phony scandal against the Republican Speaker of the House. Wounded by scandal, perhaps he'll be less effective in the upcoming immigration battle with Senate leaders.

The phony ABC report stated that Hastert was under FBI investigation, having been fingered by indicted lobbyists.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert, is under investigation by the FBI, which is probing corruption in Congress, ABC News reported on Wednesday.

ABC, citing high level Justice Department sources, said information implicating Hastert was developed from convicted lobbyists who are now cooperating with the government. Part of the investigation involves a letter Hastert wrote three years ago, urging the Secretary of the Interior to block a casino on an Indian reservation that would have competed with those of other tribes.

The Justice Department, which oversees the FBI, issued a flat-out denial.

How do you know the ABC report was phony/false? Because ABC reiterates the report, but uses weasel words that act both as a retraction and a face-saver to the vast swarms of not-so-bright people out there:

Correspondent Brian Ross stood by his report, saying he has checked with his sources who say the story accurately represents the facts "as they know them." [in other words, ABC has no idea - ed.]

"There's enough there for them (the FBI) to take a look at the speaker" and other members of Congress, Ross said in an interview.

Let's get this logic right: Since "Congress is being investigated" and "Hastert is a member of Congress," ergo, "Hastert is being investigated" and/or "Hastert is an FBI target."

Nice attempted smear job, ABC....oh, shocker, using an "unnamed source"

It's a felony for government employees to leak information regarding ongoing criminal probes.

Brian Ross will hopefully join Mapes, Rather, Eason and the other leftist tools, and get fired for his smear attempt. Even better: A judge should force him to reveal his source, who has committed a felony.

Too bad it didn't work. You MSM'ers lost it, with RatherGate. Good Riddance.

Immigration Details

What, specifically, should be done? B23, add your comments.

1. Fence. Build a fence.
2. Sanctions. Announce a future date (6 months) when rigid employer sanctions will commence.
3. Private Market enforcement to prevent government stand-down. Allow for an experimental 5 year period, a private right of action for workers to sue employers who hire illegals. 50% of the statutory fines, plus attorneys fees, to the whistleblower.
4. Overseas only. Guest worker permits cannot be issued in the US. They can only be issued at foreign consulates, in person. (This is how you get workers to vountarily go back home.)
5. Alien babies born here are not citizens; they become citizens only if their parents are citizens, when the child reaches majority. If the parents choose to remain outlaws, the kids never get US green status.
6. Why in the HELL does $30 billion of remittances get outbounded to Mexico, without US backup withholding?

7. The tough question is to avoid a huge, Soviet bureaucracy administering the programs. I used to say, "like DMV," but to be honest, the DMV works pretty well these days (compared to 15 years ago).

8. GREAT IDEA. How to decide how many "guest workers?" I'm against a big bureaucracy. Here's a simple, elegant solution: Legislate that guest workers cannot exceed __% of the work force, however determined. That is the cap. Then, each year, each state is allocated its pro rata % of potential guest workers within that cap. If 5 million workers is the national limit, and California represents 10% of the working population, then California can earmark up to 500,000 workers to come into California. The state government of Calfornia - the governor or otherwise, but must be elected and subject to voter backlash - picks the actual number. So the governor, with the choice of 0 - to 500,000 each year, must be closely in tune with the various politicals of the state, in picking the #. Aggregate that times 50, and you've got your guest worker program, decentralized into 50 political decision-making jurisdicitons, with federal administration of the "backshop." A guest worker's permit would be "California only" or the like. Interesting commerce clause/interstate travel issue, but since they are not US nationals, I believe Commerce Clause will be trumped by stronger arm of Congressional powers over the border.

A Solid Indictment of the Iraqi War

Jesse Macbeth and Dave Burge lay down pure Heartland facts about Iraq: "Stop the Lies."

Macbeth's genius shows itself with his use of Captain James T. Kirk's Lying Logic Loop*:

"These lying liars went to the principal and started hurling lies. ... They accused me of lying, which was a complete lie, because in truth they were the real liars. It was then I realized how damaging lies can be, even when the fat Goth poetry club chicks still believe you. "

Commies, Immigration and Open Borders

Senate Democrats Show Their Colors; Vote in Favor of Total Amnesty for 18 Million Illegals.

Read it here. And for gosh sakes, AP, don't use the word "amnesty"

WASHINGTON - The Senate rejected a California Democrat's plan to allow the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the country [it's 18 million - ed.] to remain, work and eventually become Americans, preserving a fragile bipartisan coalition needed to pass the bill. ...Feinstein's amendment, defeated 61 to 37 [how did Democrats vote? - ed] would have supplanted the compromise that allows illegal immigrants here five years or more to stay and work six years and seek legal residency after paying back taxes and fines and showing they were learning English.

*****

The Democratic Party has adopted the open borders theology of the old international pinko directorates of Comintern and Cominform.

Redux - Bummer's Original Post May 2005:

Any person or politician who voices concern over the 10 to 20 million illegal (mostly Mexican and Central American) aliens here in the U.S., gets denounced as a racist. Face it, you are a racist bastard. The only reason you want to stop the tens of millions of "guests" from coming here, is because you are white and they are colored.

There's an equally fun game that has been played for 5 decades by Leftie professors and Hollywooders. When the extent of Communist infiltration was exposed, after WWII, those doing the exposing were attacked as being extremist tyrants and despots. But the Venona Project files - the deciphered Soviet cables from that era - establish that, in fact, Joseph McCarthy was correct. The "Hollywood Blacklist" was a good thing, because in fact they were subversive agents of a foreign power hell-bent on destroying the U.S., who had infiltrated high echelons of the US government, and Hollywood. (Note, that precisely none of the dozens/hundreds of historians and tenured professors whose mimeographed denuciations of the anti-red movement [as being "factually wrong"], have come forward to admit they were wrong. Don't hold your breath. ...)

[Note, this is why Hollywood continues to make fake propaganda movies, like George Clooney's recent "Good Night and Good Luck" - to try to hide the fact that McCarthy was correct. - ed]

***

Communism was by its internal logic a world movement, as its leaders understood that the modest economic output possible under a controlled economy could not compete in the long run with either the military ordnance or consumer goods capacity of Western free market economies. Accordingly, a collectivist economic structure must either be uniformily adopted/enforced globally, or it would fall prey to capitalism's bribery of the masses, achieved via the vast array of goodies offered by capitalism (albeit inequitably distributed, so goes the Red theory).

The "Communist International" - Comintern for short - and later, the Cominform (Communist Information Bureau) - were the "trade organizations" of the commies, like the DNC is to the Clinton and Kennedy clans, or the RNC to the Bush clan. These Red organizations, along with the spy agencies of the Soviet Union and its Eastern Bloc satellites, worked the trenches of the Cold War, to defeat the West, border by border. Since the commies could not out-produce the West, either in military or consumer goods, the Cold War was fought in other ways, including the key strategic device of changing Western public opinion towards the Reds.

That's why the Reds' infiltration of both Hollywood (with its dominance over worldwide popular culture and media) and the US State Department (again, with dominant fact-finding tendrils worldwide) was key to its Cold War strategy. Those two behemoths had (and still have) a gigantic effect over domestic and world opinion. Control those, and you have a significant amount of input and control over world opinion.

***

Alas, the commie/collectivists did not go away with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Collectivists still believe that capitalism is wrong, and that one of capitalism's defining elements is that of 'national borders' - mere devices of the capitalist structure to violently protect its entrenched capital from being accessed by the proletariat. Borders prevent the proletariat from obtaining control of the means of production - raw material, land, and the like.

So, all those collectivists have not changed their minds; rather, they have migrated to niche causes. The unifying theme of those causes is the erosion of United States military and economic hegemony. Because without that erosion, the worldwide collectivist movement simply cannot thrive, other than via short-lived, localized uprisings doomed for failure, more or less akin to a co-ordinated "bread riot" movement that abates when the next inevitable local strong man steps in to impose order over the mess left by the riots.

And to break that hegemony, you have to do away with the border. That's the thinking.

***

When the efforts of the Comintern and Cominform were exposed in the US, the commie puppetmasters made sure that those who worked to expose the movement were vilified.
Intimidation was their best weapon.

Compare that strategy, with those who are advocates of a "U.S. without borders." Anyone who voices concern over the millions coming across the border, illegally, is a racist. It's the same intimidation and vilification strategy, brought to you from the same collectivist playbook.

***

C'mon. Of course, Soviet agents should not be ensconced in the upper echelon of the U.S. State Department.

Of course the U.S. borders should be under control of the U.S. We get to determine who gets in.

Of course, illegal aliens should be expelled. And, of course the U.S. should, and will, invite millions of immigrants back under some structured guest worker program. Maybe 2 million, maybe 10 million. Let's do the math and figure it out.

But with all the noise, how can you be sure that establishing border control is the correct policy? Because the collectivists call you racist for even considering it, that's why.

It's that easy to spot. There are no sound arguments in favor of an open border. So, instead, you get called a racist.

Thug Lawyers Have No Silver Screen of Immunity

Lawyers are granted a limited immunity in furtherance of the workings of our representative legal system. But it is a limited immunity:
"We expect lawyers to obey the law," said [Columbia law professor] John Coffee. "And when lawyers are receiving wiretap transcripts, which they have no colorable basis for believing were lawful, it's no different than if lawyers were holding onto 10 bags of cocaine for their clients while they were in jail."

How odd to see one's colleagues getting indicted. They're guilty, of course...but it's still odd.

Attorney Gen: Thugs Can Be Prosecuted

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said he believes journalists can be prosecuted for publishing classified information. "We have an obligation to enforce those laws. We have an obligation to ensure that our national security is protected. [First Amendment press rights do not trump] the ... ability of the federal government to go after criminal activity," Gonzales told ABC's "This Week."

LA Times Busted Portraying Immigration Lobbyist as Ordinary Person

The LA Times ran a big story about immigration, the gist being how important foreign workers are. Lots of pictures of a California soccer-mom small business owner and her immigrant men workers:

A Job Americans Won't Do, Even at $34 an Hour

Some landscape firms rebut claims that higher pay, not immigration reform, is needed. Cyndi Smallwood is looking for a few strong men for her landscaping company...She'll pay as much as $34 an hour.

She can't find them.

How did the LA Times find Cyndi Smallwood for this pro-illegal alien article? Was the reporter driving down the street, and saw her with her crews? That is certainly what the article's pictures connote.

The article paints her as a neutral:

"Smallwood is ambivalent on immigration reform...without a guest worker program, she says, her company probably will not survive. "To get workers, you have to steal them from other companies," the 54-year-old entrepreneur says."

Ambivalent?

She is an Immigration Task Force Member of the California Landscape Contractors Association. She lobbies Washington for a guest worker program.

An employer of manual laborers, who is an immigration reform lobbyist ... she is portrayed by the LA Times as a soccer mom small business owner, who cannot find people to work for her, even though she is offering $34 per hour. The LA Times states that she is

"..ambivalent on immigration reform."

***

A complete fabrication by the LA Times.*

***

Longtime S&C readers know this MSM trick. Memogate brought it into the harsh light:

1. Establish the political axe to grind.
2. Construct the story line.
3. Cherry pick people who will support the hatchet job viewpoint.
4. Find middle-class looking activities, and portray the activists as just ordinary people - unbiased jurors, in order to propagandize other middle-class moderates to falsely indentify with the disguised activist.

Immigration lobbyist and employer of unskilled manual laborer employer is disguised by the LA Times as being a soccer mom who is ambivalent about immigration reform.

Palestinian Civil War

Bummer prefers peace, ceteris paribus.

But as between the following?:

1. Militant Arab dictatorship, with tacit and overt backing from other Arab despots, continues to attack a democratic country, continuing a 60-year period of hostilities.

-or-

2. Militant Arab dictatorship breaks into warring factions, resulting in a civil war, thereby causing a cessation of attacks on the neighboring democracy.

***

Hard to avoid choosing #2. Cull the herd of able-bodied militants serving fascists.

So, isn't Democracy the winnner, with a Palestinian civil war? Again, peace is pareto superior; but a civil war isn't so bad, for the Democracies.

Of course, apologists will ... blame the Jews!

Jaw Drop 3

Charles joins in on the immigration Jaw Drop thingy.

Meanwhile, drop your jaw again that the Senate now insists on a fence. (Here it comes: BUMMER SHOWED YOU SO.)

WASHINGTON - The Senate voted to build 370 miles of triple-layered fencing along the Mexican border Wednesday and clashed over citizenship for millions of men and women who live in the United States illegally. Amid increasingly emotional debate over election-year immigration legislation, senators voted 83-16 to add fencing and 500 miles of vehicle barriers along the southern border. It marked the first significant victory in two days for conservatives seeking to place their stamp on the
contentious measure.

Jimmy Carter vs. John Galt

Jimmy Carter was an abject failure as a US President, but for the fact that his ineptitude paved the way for the Reagan revolution. He is a terrific builder of homes in poor neighborhoods, but his thinking process has remained pretty lame whenever a matter touches and concerns anything beyond an impoverished Georgia county.

Jimmy has decided to continue to pretend he is chief diplomat of the US, some 26 years after he was escorted to the electoral door. You see, after 50+ years of attacks against Israel by Arab countries, as well as recent calls for the destruction of Israel by despotic leaders of Arab tribal states, Israel has begun a soul-wrenching withdrawal from occupied territories, which Israel took over several generations ago when a pan-Arab coalition started a war against Israel, to wipe it off the map. The war went badly for the Arab states; they would have been over-run but for Russia threatening to use the Bomb after its Arab friends were annihilated in their aggressive war.

As Israel disengages from these radical Arab ghettos, they will decay further, in some ways exposing the Big Lie of the Arab hate-mongers. Leftists know this; leftists hate Atlas Shrugged - visceral hate* - and they see it happening with the Israeli withdrawal.

Solution? A little Orwellian Newspeak from Jimmy Carter:

"Israel's new plan: A land grab"

Yes, you see, by unilaterally pulling out of the territories, Israel is NOT giving up land. Nope. It is grabbing land.

Great, got it. Thanks, Jimmy, for that clarity of thought.

Time to Add Some S&C Guest Bloggers

Bummer sees a long work period ahead, and perhaps only one or two postings per week. And some of those may be lame.

Maybe its time to add one or more other contributors to the blog.

Interested? If so, email me a site where I can read a couple of your essays. Or, send me a couple.

Requirements:

1. Preference for those who hold contrarian views for which there is outright hostility within your peer or work group. it just makes your arguments and observations more interesting(Bummer is a logical, non-partisan, social liberal/fiscal and military conservative right smack dab in illogical, shrill Leftist partisan Hollywood. )
2. Rigid partisanship isn't good. Of course you are likely one or the other, but remember that is ordinary and boring. What is rare and worth reading is the cut-through analysis, or skewering, "regardless of whose ox gets gored."
3. To the point. Few really have any interest in a 2000 word essay on the bouquet of the '82 Latour that you openned for your birthday.
4. I'm not good at technical stuff. You'll have to wing it with this lame blogger site for now.
5. S&C gets non-exclusive license to all your stuff posted here. Also, Bummer is the "final say" editor. You can call me an arse for editing or deleting something, or kicking you out....but, I still get to do it, if I want.*
6. Absolute promise, legally enforceable by an agreement you'll have to sign, to never, ever disclose the identity of Bummer.
7. Relative high tolerance for Bummer's proclivities of teasing effete homos, hairy feminists, commie pinkos and right wing christian soldiers.
8. Oh, and yes, fearless when it comes to pointing out that most members of the press are punk-ass bitches.

Lemme know. And thanks, B23, for all the clicks.

Jaw Drop 2

Bummer is the only person in America who applauded Bush's immigration speech.

The devil is in the details, and I admit I have little faith in the political process on this polarized but critical issue, but...Bush's stated policies of a comprehensive reform were logical and strong. That doesn't mean anyone, including Bush, will carry through.

Biggest weakness was allowing Congress to fight this out. Bush should have issued an ultimatum: "Congress, deliver me X by this date, and I will sign it. If it strays from what I have just said, I won't sign it, and I will have my own bill introduced, which I will sign. "

Thus, any member of Congress who is on the wrong side of the vote will have hell to pay in November.

Jaw Drops

Only a week ago, Bummer quiped:
"My jaw will drop if it comes true:

" 'The President hasn't asked for my advice, but here it is anyway....…The time has come to go on national television and say you were wrong, and you've changed your mind. About immigration.... Say that, more fundamentally, you're now convinced that our first priority has to be getting control over our borders.' "

My jaw has dropped. Bullseye, Rocket.

So it goes, with the news of the past 24 hours that Bush will put the National Guard on the border:

President Bush will call for thousands of National Guard troops to be deployed along the Mexico border in support of patrols aimed at keeping out illegal immigrants, a White House official said Sunday on the eve of an Oval Office address announcing the plan.

To tell the truth, I don't believe it. Bush will want credit with the ROC for saying it, but he will not actually deploy a material number of troops. I hope I'm wrong, but I've lost my faith in Bush, over welfare for seniors and immigration.

***

For the record, Bummer expressed that immigration would be "the issue" of the 06 midterm elections.

Q: Which candidates will connect with the position held by 70-80% of the voting public?

A: The winning candidates.

Religion of Non-Violence and the Lap-Dog Irony-Free Press

Associated Press story:

JAKARTA, Indonesia -

Iran's president said Thursday that any threats against Tehran would make dialogue [with the US] more difficult.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad intensified his verbal attacks on Israel calling it a "a tyrannical regime that one day will be destroyed."

The Iranian leader, asked what it would take to begin talks with the United States to resolve the standoff, told Metro TV that Iran "is ready to engage in dialogue with anybody. There are no limits to our dialogue ... but if someone points a weapon at your face and says you must speak, will you do that?"

Rocket Hits Bullseye

Yes, the Powerline guys are a bit rigid and partisan, but they more or less adhere to logic, so (like many of the Bummer 23) I check in there from time to time.

Alas, Hinderaker sorta nails this one. My jaw will drop if it comes true:

The President hasn't asked for my advice, but here it is anyway.

…The time has come to go on national television and say you were wrong, and you've changed your mind. About immigration.

Give a major speech in prime time. Say that you still think that a long-term solution should include a guest worker program. … Say that, more fundamentally, you're now convinced that our first priority has to be getting control over our borders.

That's step one. Here's step two. … You need to couple this tax cut with spending cuts. Tax cuts unaccompanied by spending restraint are rightly viewed with cynicism by both conservatives and liberals. Focus on earmarks; even the liberals don't try to defend them. Threaten to veto any spending bill that contains a single earmark. Then do it.

Wolfowitz Continues Its March Forward

Bummer takes a lot of heat for being a war-monger who (still) approves enthusiastically of the Iraq War. Bummer believes in the Wolfowitz Plan.

Few will notice this little AP item:

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's prime minister-designate said Tuesday the main stumbling blocks to forming a new Cabinet have been overcome and he expects to present his team to parliament for approval by the end of the week.

In a motion filed Friday, Moussaoui said he wants a new trial, because he lied in this first trial.

DWK: Driving While Kennedy

WASHINGTON - Rep. Patrick Kennedy was cited for three traffic violations after his early morning car crash near the Capitol, according to a police report.

The report by a U.S. Capitol Police officer said Kennedy, D-R.I., drove his green 1997 Ford Mustang convertible into a security barrier near the Capitol shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday, and that Kennedy had red, watery eyes, slurred speech and unsteady balance.
Kennedy said in a statement he had taken a sleeping pill and another drug that can cause drowsiness, but had not been drinking alcohol before the accident. "Apparently, I was disoriented from the medication," Kennedy said. He scheduled a news conference for 3 p.m. EDT Friday in Washington. The police report described Kennedy as "ability impaired," and listed alcohol influence as a contributing circumstance in the crash.

So Bummer, a long time JazzFest guest (New Orleans version), was there again last week.

There's this fusion reggae funk band, Yerba Buena. "Good Grass." The music rocks. But I gotta tell you: The band had a female dancer - don't know her name or whether she is a core member or not - who (a) had the hottest pelvic girdle that Bummer had ever witnessed, and (b) knew how to use it.

Thugs' Worst Nightmare

A fired Bush insider under indictment, with subpoena power.

WASHINGTON - Lawyers for I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby urged a federal judge Monday to force several media organizations to turn over e-mails, drafts of news articles and reporters' notes they say the former top White House aide needs to receive a fair trial in the CIA leak case.

In a 45-page filing, Libby's lawyers said reporters have "no right — under the Constitution or the common law — to deprive Mr. Libby of evidence that will help establish his innocence at trial."
